Writer as Translator
Daniel Weissbort introduces the panel and relates how his experience as a writer in an anglophone culture troubles his conception of translation. Jorge Accame and Zakariah Ariffin explore the possibility of the translation as a new, original work and the experience of the “otherness” that the translator inhabits in the act of translation. They also pursue the idea that all writing is an act of translation. Suchen Christine Lim shares that she has a different perspective as a citizen of a multilingual culture. She posits that one can mimic or echo a culture’s forms and mannerisms. Near the end of the recording, Peter Nazareth introduces E.A. Markham, who then discusses the role of persona in his work.
