Susan Benner tells the story of how she became interested in translating Spanish works after her two-year stay in Ecuador from 1984-85. Benner says that after she returned from Ecuador she continued reading Spanish works and found that most Spanish literature was written by men. She became interested in finding Spanish works written by women and discovered that there simply weren’t many female Spanish authors being published. Benner then discusses her experience in translating a full length play by Jorge Accamé. Benner relates some of the difficulties and dilemmas she faced in translating Accamé’s work.
