Adam Hochschild discusses how to write the first-person narrative without sounding self-centered.  As examples of how to effectively write using the first person narrative, Hochschild reads passages from Homage to Catalonia, written by George Orwell and gives a synopsis of Orwell’s essay “Shooting an Elephant.” Hochschild also reads from Primo Levi’s book The Reawakening.  Hochschild discusses his experiences during his time in India where he taught a writing workshop.  Hochschild feels it is important to reflect on personal experiences before beginning to write about them.  Hochschild takes questions and comments from the audience for the last 35 minutes of the tape.
