Mila Haugová Interview
IWP Program Assistant Juliet Barnes interviews poet Mila Haugová. Haugová shares that she was able to say what she always wanted to say in poetry in her book, Ancient Love, and for this reason, she says, this is her most important book. She says that her poems are about love and relationships. Haugová describes how she became more self-aware and more conscious of language as she matured as a poet. Haugová reads from her poem, “On Shadow,” in Slovak and English. She says that a poem comes from deep within a particular language, and this complicates the process of translation. Haugová describes her affinity for the image of the unicorn; an animal that is, she says, of the imagination, that unites heart and mind. This is what she hopes to do in her poems. She says she found her poetic voice in her fifth book, Clear Days, when she decided to be sincere and tell the truth as much as possible in her work. Haugová shares that this shift was connected to the sudden death of her partner in 1990. She reflects on how that loss has changed her perspective.
