Mahmoud Shuqair identifies the Israeli occupation of the West Bank as one of the primary subjects of his writing.  He maintains, however, that his intentions aren’t political or polemical in nature, but rather he tries to put politics aside and follow the logic of literary writing.  He discusses how his political activism led to his imprisonment by the Israeli government and eventual 18-year exile.
