Into Markku and Choi Tong-Ho Translation Workshop
The translation class workshops the English translation of Into Markku’s poem “My Darling Is Driving the Coffin.” They compare the translator’s interpretation of the language, tone, and meaning of the poem with the author’s intentions for the same. Into Markku reads a number of poems from his manuscript Elvis Lived His Life Alone in Finnish. Choé Tong-ho reads a selection of poems, first in English, then in Korean to convey the sound of the work. He discusses issues of emphasis and connotation in translating from Korean to English, and reflects on the relative success of translations of his work.
