Five authors from the 1994 IWP share their impressions of America.  Josef Haslinger reflects on how the various nationalities and ethnicities that make up the U.S. population impact the nation as a whole.  He believes immigrants view themselves in the U.S. in a unique way and it can affect how they think of their homeland.  He also compares the French and American ways of life.  Alexander Skidan says that this is his first visit to the United States so he doesn’t have a clear view of the culture of North America as a whole, but does talk about how he viewed the United States as a child.  Then he discusses how Russian authors tend to write about America. Amir Or of Israel describes his first visit to Iowa City and contemplates what it means to be politically correct in this country.  Haruhiko Yoshimeki speaks of his two experiences of living in America.  David Toscana describes the effects of MTV has had on on American culture and literature.  Questions are taken from the audience.
