Images of America
Tamil author Sivasankari discusses her experiences and impressions of the United States from five visits she has taken to America. Sivasankari published a travelogue with 15 articles based on a 1976 visit to the United States. She has noticed that many Americans are often ignorant of other countries’ histories, but admires the patriotism she has seen and wishes that her children could experience the same in India.
Kwame Dawes, Jamaican writer, shares his mostly positive impressions of the United States. He was struck by how large and diverse the country is. He is impressed by the accessibility to information in the United States. Because of the country’s cultural diversity Dawes feels that, if he lived here, he would have so much to write about, but argues that American writers don’t seem concerned about the “big issues.”
Two unknown speakers follow and give their own impressions of America.
