Images of America
Four participants from the International Writing Program in 1988 take part in a panel discussion and share their impressions of America. This is Angélique Gorodischer’s first trip to Iowa but not the first time to the United States. Celso Campos Román tells about his travels throughout the United States. He had wonderful visits to Portland, Oregon and San Francisco. He also visited Mississippi and described it to be a real third world, compared to the other states. Marie Nimier was last in the United States in the early 1980s and feels the country has really gone downhill since then. She is disgusted by the politics and how the voting processs works here. The sense of time here is very different from France and she feels Americans are not able to concentrate for long periods of time. Nimier finds American people very friendly and helpful, though. Darman Moenir tells about his impressions of American people. Everyone he has come into contact with has been very interested in his writing, personal life and his country. The tape cuts out during the middle of their discussion at 30 minutes.
