Christos Homenides begins by describing how the political circumstances of Greece in the mid- and late-20th century has affected the literary production of the same period.  He posits that Greece’s political turmoil is reflected in the literature, as it was used to communicate overtly political messages, or to locate a contemporary Greek identity.  He relates how Nikos Kazantzakis’ Zorba the Greek mythologized Greek identity.  He summarizes plot of his novel The Wise Kid and reflects on the literary convention of reappropriating Greek mythology and the literature of Ancient Greece in contemporary literature.
