| Each week-long series of classes will introduce participants to the folk/rock chord strumming popular in the 1960s. Deb will use the music of Pete Seger; Peter, Paul and Mary; Bob Dylan; and the Beatles (among others) to teach 15 or more basic chords in first position and introduce the class members to tonal theory expressed thorough folk and rock chord progressions. Several strums and finger picking styles will also be
introduced.
This workshop style class is designed for the beginning guitarist and for individuals who have played in the past and would enjoy a "refresher course." Students will need to bring a six string guitar of any style to class and a copy of the book "Chord Strummer" will be provided for each student in the class (Details will be sent to participants a few weeks before the start of the session). While a solid week of lessons in a small group format will provide an excellent start, students are encouraged to take more than one session for additional practice and the fun of shared music-making. Class size will be limited to 10 to ensure individual attention and to allow the instructor to incorporate more advanced chord variations and strumming techniques for students who are enrolled in their second or third session. Other sessions are offered July 13 - 17 or August 17 - 21 INSTRUCTOR: Deb Pava Singer is a Ph.D. candidate in Musicology at the University of Iowa School of Music. A lifelong learner, Deb has earned B.A. degrees in Comparative Religion (1976) and Dance (1981); a M.S.W. in Social Work (1978); and a M.A. in Music Theory (2006). For the past two years she has been a teaching assistant in the Musicology Area and has taught as an instructor at Cornell College (Mt. Vernon, IA) and as an adjunct instructor at The University of Iowa. Deb has played guitar since the mid 1960s and has been teaching private and group lessons for the past 30 years. She particularly enjoys working with beginning guitar students. Cost: $50 per person, per week-long session (includes book) | |
