One of a family's most wrenching decisions is deciding if a loved one is poised to become a danger on the road. Currently, scientists are creating tests to show whether older drivers are safe or whether people with conditions such as early Alzheimer's disease should stop driving. Researchers at UI have developed a set of behind-the-wheel exams performed in a driving simulator and on the road in instrumented vehicles. A drive in a tricked-out Ford Taurus or Nissan Q45 can record actions the driver takes, much like an airplane "black box". Join Dr. Rizzo to learn more about the design of this study, and the results derived from it!

INSTRUCTOR: Matthew Rizzo is a Professor in the Department of Neurology in the UI Carver College of Medicine. He is Director of the Division of Neuroergonomics and is a senior member of the Division of Behavioral Neurology and Cognitive Neuroscience. Dr. Rizzo’s research focuses on cognitive impairments caused by aging and neurological diseases. He has a special interest in vision and cognition, including their role in real-world tasks. The latter research uses an interactive driving simulator and an instrumented vehicle.
