The workshop will illustrate the importance of presence and response in the work of the actor. Participants will receive a brief and exciting exposure to impulse and response training for the actor through the beginning repetition exercises of Sanford Meisner. Meisner developed his technique of using an interdependent series of exercises that build upon one another after working with the Group Theatre at New York City's Neighborhood Playhouse, and continued its refinement for fifty years. Students will be required to participate extensively in every class – no observers please.

INSTRUCTOR: Dr. John Cameron is the head of the acting program at the University of Iowa. Before coming to Iowa, he was a member of the theatre faculty at Stony Brook University on Long Island for 10 years where he served as Director of the Living/Learning Center for the Arts and Director of Graduate Studies for the Department of Theatre Arts. He trained with Sanford Meisner and has performed on stage in Europe, Central America, Australia and in various regional theatres throughout the United States, and in television and film. His extensive credits as a director and playwright include academic and professional stage and television.
