| We tell stories about our day, our life, when we share news with family and friends. We talk of the high points and the low; we describe where we live and where we work. The stories reflect our traditions and customs, our experiences conforming to or rebelling against them. We implicitly chronicle the watershed moments in the history of the neighborhood, city or country we grew up in. Can the story of the individual also be a story of the community? Where does that story begin? Can it be a ‘fun’ story if nothing happens in it?
During this class, you will read extracts from novels, short stories, poems, perhaps listen to some music, but, most importantly, write and read each other’s stories. Ask yourselves why we like the stories we do and whether that’s a window into the kind of story we want to tell others. INSTRUCTOR: Puja Birla graduated from the Nonfiction Writing Program in 2007 and is currently working on her second MFA in Literary Translation. She has taught several literature and writing courses at UI since fall 2004 and she has some intention of becoming a writer. She misses the monsoon rains of Bombay but has developed a deep appreciation of Iowa's clear blue skies. | |
